Back in Spokane

Got back to Spokane on Sunday. Had the day off Monday so my friend and I went apartment hunting. Found what we were looking for and applied, hopefully to move in next week. Went to a barbecue in the evening, followed by shooting some pool with an old friend. Once I get my driver’s license and make it to a meeting in my old hall I’ll really feel like I’m back home, instead of just visiting.

Life sure doesn’t slow down to give me a breather, though. I’m back at work and there’s a lot to adjust to, but I’m only working two days this week cause I’m heading out to Wisconsin on Thursday for my sister’s wedding this weekend. Should be nice to see friends and family.

Returning to Spokane

I’ll be returning to Spokane, WA, on July 4th. I hear the whole country is going to throw a big party to celebrate my return, complete with fireworks. Excellent.

The very next week I’ll be heading to Wisconsin for my sister’s wedding. She dun gone and done it. I look forward to finally meeting the bloke. He better be friendly. You know how protective we older brothers are.  :-)

A New Year in Shanghai

We (Tre and I)  just got to the airport here in Shanghai, and it just happens to be New Year’s Eve. Purely coincidence, but I’m curious what the Chinese will do to celebrate the New Year, since it’s not significant on their calendar.

Anyhow, I’ll post pics when we get back; only here for a few days.

Incidentally, facebook is blocked, but watchtower.org is not. :)

Tracking the Nomad

Not that anybody would check my site for this sort of information, but …

I’ll be returning to Korea on Sept 4th (arriving on the evening of the 5th). I’m planning on staying for six months this time. I’m putting all my stuff in storage here in Spokane, so I won’t have to pay rent on an apartment. Kinda adds some more fuzziness to the question of which place I call home. Is it the place where I’ve spent 12 of the past 15 months, and where I have my own apartment, or is the place where all my stuff is in a storage unit? Hmmm …

What happens after the next six months is still undecided, and depends on unknown factors. Guess we’ll see.

The Secret to Beating Jet Lag

Last Saturday I returned home from two months in Seoul. Perhaps you think I will tell you that the key to beating jet lag is to stay awake the entire trip so that you’re so exhausted that you have no difficulty getting to sleep at the right time and thereby reset your internal clock. Well, I tried this (30 hours straight with no sleep), and it works. But there’s a problem. Did you notice the words “you’re so exhausted”? Isn’t that what I was trying to avoid in the first place? So now I’m back to a normal sleep schedule, but all that lost sleep weakened my immune system and I came down with a cold, in addition to still being pretty tired. Nevertheless, I have to admit it’s better than the last return trip, when I could barely stay awake at work for several days. I guess this is the best I can hope for.

Into the Jaws of the … Camels

A friend from my congregation back home (see, I still call Spokane “home”) is on his way to Mali, where he’ll spend 8 months doing … whatever it is you do in an extremely poor semi-arid desert country with a 45% literacy rate. I presume this would involve ostriches and camels. Although there is still some question regarding internet availability, we hope to follow his exploits at: http://kalebwenzel.podcastpeople.com

New Phone Numbers

I now have a working internet phone with a Spokane phone number and a cell phone with a Seoul number so friends on both sides of the Pacific can contact me without paying crazy international rates. Since both numbers will likely be used for the long term, I’d rather not post them, but feel free to drop an e-mail to dan@danhochee.net if you would like and I’ll be glad to share. Besides, it would be nice to hear from you, since we never talk these days.

You get used to this sort of thing

For those of you who have known me for a while, you’re probably familiar with the unending series of unfortunate events that keep my life interesting and my friends entertained. Well, here’s the latest installment: a car accident.

Returning to Seoul

I’ll be heading back to Seoul for round two on August 19th (arriving two days later due to the length of travel and time difference). It will be great fun to see all my new friends again.

The Beautiful Hauser Lake

I posted some pictures of where I live. Some of my Korean friends didn’t believe me when I described Hauser Lake to them. Now they have undeniable proof. I’d like to get a photo of an osprey or heron before I return to Seoul so they can see I didn’t make that up either.
